Introduction: A Vision Beyond the Tangible

Humans stand in this existence contemplating the blessings that surround them from all sides, but the perspective of many stops at the limits of food, drink, clothing, and bodily well-being. These tangible blessings are undoubtedly from the grace of Allah Almighty, but they are not everything. Divine wisdom wants humans to see beyond the dining table and bodily garments, to see treasures of intangible blessings that are beyond price. When the believer becomes aware of these, they understand the meaning of true happiness and the meaning of a life worthy of being lived.

The Greatest Blessing: Islam and Faith

The greatest blessing that Allah has bestowed upon humans is the blessing of guidance to Islam and faith. This blessing is the foundation upon which all other blessings are built, and it is the compass that guides humans through the darkness of life. Allah says: "يَمُنُّونَ عَلَيْكَ أَنْ أَسْلَمُوا قُلْ لَا تَمُنُّوا عَلَيَّ إِسْلَامَكُمْ بَلِ اللَّهُ يَمُنُّ عَلَيْكُمْ أَنْ هَدَاكُمْ لِلْإِيمَانِ" "They consider it a favor to you that they have accepted Islam. Say, 'Do not consider your Islam a favor to me. Rather, Allah has conferred favor upon you that He has guided you to the faith...'" (Al-Hujurat 49:17).

Faith is not merely words spoken; rather, it is a light that illuminates the heart, expands the chest, guides the intellect, and comforts the soul. The believer sees the universe through a different lens, seeing in every atom evidence of the Creator's greatness, in every event divine wisdom, and in every trial concealed mercy. This faith gives humans a lofty purpose that transcends the desires of the stomach and private parts, making them see this world as it truly is: a passage to the Hereafter and a field for harvesting in the afterlife.

The Expansion of the Chest: A Blessing Unequaled by Earthly Treasures

One of the greatest blessings that many overlook is the blessing of an expanded chest. Allah says: "أَلَمْ نَشْرَحْ لَكَ صَدْرَكَ" "Did We not expand for you, [O Muhammad], your breast?" (Ash-Sharh 94:1). Although this verse addresses the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), its meaning extends to every believer whose chest Allah has expanded for faith.

The expansion of the chest is when the heart is purified of impurities, opens up to goodness, expands for wisdom, and is calm with certainty. It is a blessing only appreciated by those who have experienced constriction of the chest, the bitterness of anxiety, and the darkness of doubt. The believer whose chest Allah has expanded for faith finds pleasure in obedience, happiness in remembrance, tranquility in prayer, and comfort in reflection. This spiritual-psychological state cannot be measured by wealth, status, or worldly possessions.

The Attraction of the Heart Towards Obedience

Among Allah's hidden blessings upon His servants is that He attracts their hearts to turn to His obedience, so they find in worship a pleasure they do not find elsewhere. This divine attraction is a favor from Allah upon those He has chosen from His servants. Allah says in the sacred hadith: "Whoever shows enmity to a saint of Mine, I declare war upon him. My servant does not draw near to Me with anything more beloved to Me than what I have made obligatory upon him. My servant continues to draw near to Me with voluntary deeds until I love him. When I love him, I become his hearing with which he hears, his sight with which he sees, his hand with which he strikes, and his foot with which he walks. Were he to ask of Me, I would surely give him; and were he to seek refuge with Me, I would surely grant him refuge." (Narrated by Al-Bukhari).

This heart attraction makes obedience easy for the soul, beloved to the heart, transforming worship from a burdensome duty into spiritual delight, from a heavy obligation into psychological comfort. The believer whom Allah has blessed with this blessing finds pleasure in night prayers, sweetness in reciting the Quran, tranquility in remembrance, and joy in charity.

Finding Pleasure in Obedience: Tasting Faith

When a believer reaches the level of finding pleasure in obedience, they have tasted the sweetness of faith. This taste is a great blessing from Allah that He bestows upon whomever He wills of His servants. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever is pleased with Allah as Lord, with Islam as religion, and with Muhammad as Messenger has tasted the sweetness of faith." (Narrated by Muslim).

This pleasure makes the believer feel they are at the peak of happiness when they are in obedience to their Lord. They become most eager for prayer when its time arrives, most keen to fast during its days, and quickest to do good when the opportunity presents itself. This state arises only from Allah's blessing that grants the heart new life and opens horizons of spirituality unknown to those who limit their perspective to material blessings.

This World as a Farm for the Hereafter: A Comprehensive Vision of Life

The Islamic philosophy of life views this world as a farm for the Hereafter, as mentioned in the text: "Allah's intended purpose, glorified be His majesty, is that your worldly life be the farm of the Hereafter and the mount for eternal happiness." This vision elevates humans from the level of animals whose only concern is satisfying their instincts to the level of humans who understand the wisdom of their existence and the purpose of their life.

The world with all its blessings are means, not ends; they are tools to achieve eternal happiness in the Hereafter. Wealth is a means for charity, almsgiving, and helping the distressed; health is a means for obedience and righteous deeds; knowledge is a means to know Allah and serve His creation; status is a means for justice and benevolence. Whoever turns these means into ends has strayed from the path and lost guidance.

Denying Allah's Blessings: A Grave Danger

One of the most dangerous things humans suffer from is denying blessings, especially when using blessings in disobedience to the One who bestowed them. The text warns strongly against this: "Utilize Allah's blessings upon you in His obedience, and do not openly defy Allah by disobeying Him with what He has blessed you with, for that is among the most severe types of denial."

This is what the Quran points to in Allah's saying: "إِنَّ الْإِنْسَانَ لِرَبِّهِ لَكَنُودٌ، وَإِنَّهُ عَلَى ذَلِكَ لَشَهِيدٌ، وَإِنَّهُ لِحُبِّ الْخَيْرِ لَشَدِيدٌ" "Indeed, mankind is ungrateful to his Lord. And indeed, he is a witness to that. And indeed, he is extreme in his love of wealth." (Al-'Adiyat 100:6-8). "Kanood" means ungrateful for blessings, and this is a characteristic inherent in humans except those upon whom Allah has mercy.

Regrettably, humans testify against themselves with this ingratitude; they acknowledge Allah's blessings upon them, yet despite that they are stingy in expressing gratitude, and may even use them in disobedience to the Bestower. This is among the most severe types of injustice and ignorance.

Limited Love for Goodness: The Narrow Perspective on Blessings

The noble verse clarifies that the "goodness" that humans love is often limited only to the material blessings of this world: "Here 'goodness' means the blessings of this world according to the limited thinking and restricted reasoning of the servant, making worldly blessings his goal and purpose rather than a means to please the All-Provider, the Possessor of Strength, the Firm."

This narrow perspective makes humans slaves to this world, followers of their desires, captive to their pleasures, heedless of the wisdom of their existence and the purpose of their life. This is what Islam warns against most strongly, as in the hadith: "Wretched is the slave of the dinar, wretched is the slave of the dirham, wretched is the slave of fine cloth, wretched is the slave of velvet. If he is given, he is pleased; if he is denied, he is displeased. Wretched and overturned is he. If he is pricked by a thorn, may he not find anyone to remove it." (Narrated by Al-Bukhari).

Comparison Between Limited and Comprehensive Perspectives on Blessings
Limited Perspective (Materialistic) Comprehensive Perspective (Islamic)
Sees only material blessings Sees both material and intangible blessings
Makes this world an end in itself Makes this world a means for the Hereafter
Leads to arrogance and denial Leads to gratitude and humility
Causes constant anxiety and dissatisfaction Leads to contentment and tranquility
Makes humans slaves to desires Frees humans to worship Allah
Ends with death and perishes with its perishing Its fruits remain in the Hereafter forever

True Servitude: To Whom Does It Belong?

In the expressive sacred hadith: "I and humans and jinn are in a wondrous situation: I create and other than Me is worshipped, I provide and other than Me is thanked. My goodness descends to the servants while their evil ascends to Me." This hadith clarifies the amazing paradox: Allah is the Creator and Provider, yet the servants worship other than Him and thank other than Him!

This issue places humans before their responsibility: To whom does their true servitude belong? To Allah who created them, provided for them, and gave them everything? Or to idols, false gods, whims, and desires? The true believer knows that their servitude must be to Allah alone, their gratitude must be to Allah alone, and their obedience must be to Allah alone.

Concluding Supplication: Turning to Allah

"O Allah, take our hands to You as the honorable take to You, incline our hearts to You, direct our faces to You, and deal with us, O Lord, with benevolence, for favor is from You and to You."

Conclusion: Towards Deeper Gratitude

In conclusion, the Islamic perspective on blessings elevates humans from the material abyss to spiritual sublimity, from servitude to desires to true freedom in worshipping Allah. The real blessings are those that bring us closer to Allah, purify our souls, rectify our hearts, and bring happiness to our Hereafter.

The believer must train themselves to see hidden blessings and cultivate themselves to express practical gratitude by using blessings in obedience to the Bestower. Through this, they would have understood the wisdom of their existence, realized the purpose of their life, and deserved to be a thankful servant, worshipping Allah as if they see Him, and if they do not see Him, then indeed He sees them.

We ask Allah Almighty to open our eyes and insights to His apparent and hidden blessings, to help us express gratitude for them, and to make us among His thankful servants who see Allah's favor in everything, direct their lives to please Him, and make this world a farm for the Hereafter. Indeed, He is All-Hearing, Responsive.

O God, guide us and guide others through us, and make us a means for those who are guided.
