Patience
Introduction
In the midst of life's fluctuations and the crashing waves of worries and hardships, man stands bewildered before the decree of God and His destiny. At times you see him joyful and optimistic, and at other times you see him sad and depressed. However, in the midst of this daily struggle between hope and pain, a great value emerges that is like a light illuminating the path in the darkest circumstances. It is the value of "patience." Patience is not just a word uttered, nor is it merely a passive waiting for things to pass. Rather, it is a sublime human attitude, a tremendous inner strength, and a venerable act of worship in which the meanings of faith, strength, and determination are manifested. It is the ability to endure and remain steadfast in principle in the face of storms, and it is the common characteristic among all the great people who changed the course of history. In this topic, we will delve into the depths of this great virtue, exploring its immense benefits for the individual and society in this world and the Hereafter, and how patience can turn calamities into blessings and pains into hopes.
First Section: Definition of Patience and Its Status in Islam
Linguistically, patience (ṣabr) is derived from "ṣabara," meaning to restrain and prevent. The patient person is one who restrains himself from panic, restrains his tongue from complaining, and restrains his limbs from striking cheeks and tearing collars. Technically, scholars have defined it as restraining the soul according to what the law and reason require, or it is standing firm with affliction through good conduct. Patience has a great status in the Holy Quran and the purified Prophetic Sunnah, as it is mentioned in the Quran in more than ninety places, indicating its pivotal importance in building the Muslim personality.
In this noble verse, God directs the believers that patience and prayer are the true support in all life matters, and He gives them glad tidings that He, glory be to Him, is with them with His help, victory, and support. The companionship of God for the patient is not just a word; it is a special companionship that entails protection, care, and success.
God also made patience a cause for winning Paradise and salvation from Hellfire, and He associated it with the greatest and most magnificent acts of worship. He says:
Thus, patience and faith are the way to attain leadership in religion, i.e., leadership and a good example. In the Prophetic Sunnah, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
This noble hadith portrays the believer in his most wonderful form: he is always in a state of goodness, whether in prosperity or adversity, because each state drives him to an act of worship that brings him closer to his Lord: gratitude increases his blessings, and patience purifies his sins and raises his ranks.
Second Section: Religious and Otherworldly Benefits of Patience
Indeed, patience has abundant fruits in the Hereafter that cannot be counted. It is the greatest path to attaining God's pleasure and His gardens. Among the most prominent of these benefits are:
- Attaining God's companionship and support: As in the previous verse, God is with the patient. This divine companionship is the true source of strength for the believer, granting him tranquility in his heart, serenity in his soul, and steadfastness upon the truth.
- Success and great triumph: God often links success (al-falāḥ) with patience in many verses, such as His saying: ﴿ يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اصْبِرُوا وَصَابِرُوا وَرَابِطُوا وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ ﴾ (Surat Ali 'Imran: 200) "O you who have believed, persevere and endure and remain stationed and fear Allah that you may be successful." Success is achieving what is desired and being saved from what is feared, and it is the goal of every believer.
- Multiplication of reward without account: God singled out the patient with unlimited reward. He said: ﴿ إِنَّمَا يُوَفَّى الصَّابِرُونَ أَجْرَهُم بِغَيْرِ حِسَابٍ ﴾ (Surat Az-Zumar: 10) "Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without account." Commentators said: All deeds are weighed and counted, except patience, for the patient person is given a reward that no measure or count can reach, because he endured difficult matters that went against his desires in this world, so God gives him an unlimited reward.
- A cause for entering Paradise: The Prophet (peace be upon him) made patience a reason for entering Paradise, especially patience during affliction and the loss of loved ones. He said: "Allah says: 'I have nothing to give to My faithful servant, if I cause his dear one (from the people of the world) to die and he bears it patiently seeking reward, except Paradise.'" (Narrated by Al-Bukhari). "His dear one" means his beloved, such as his child or relative.
- Achieving leadership in religion: As mentioned in Surat As-Sajdah, patience with certainty bequeaths leadership and example. Whoever wants to be a leader for people to follow must adhere to patience and steadfastness upon the truth.
Third Section: Psychological and Health Benefits of Patience
The benefits of patience are not limited to the religious aspect; they extend to the psychological, mental, and physical health of a person. Modern psychological studies have confirmed what the Quran and Sunnah indicated centuries ago.
- Achieving inner peace and tranquility: Patience gives a person deep psychological comfort. It frees him from the anxiety and stress resulting from trying to change what cannot be changed. When a person is certain that what befell him could not have missed him, and that God has wisdom in every decree, his heart calms and his soul settles. Panic and fretfulness, on the other hand, generate severe psychological disorders such as depression and anxiety.
- Increasing problem-solving ability: Patience gives the mind an opportunity to think calmly and logically when facing problems. The hasty person often makes wrong and rash decisions that he later regrets, while the patient person can assess the situation, study available options, and choose the best one with rationality and deliberation. Patience is the fuel of sound thinking.
- Strengthening personality and building self-confidence: Every time a person patiently endures harm, calamity, or temptation, he gains new inner strength. He becomes more confident in his ability to face life and its challenges. Patience makes a person the master of himself, not a slave to his emotional reactions. It is a daily exercise in self-control and restraint, building a strong, coherent personality.
- Improving physical health: The relationship between mind and body is very close. The stress, anxiety, and anger accompanying panic cause high blood pressure, heart and digestive disorders, and weaken the immune system. In contrast, the tranquility and contentment accompanying patience strengthen the immune system, improve vital body functions, and contribute to the prevention of psychosomatic diseases. Patience is a blessing for the body as it is a blessing for the soul.
Fourth Section: Social Benefits of Patience
Patience has invaluable positive effects on the fabric of society and its relationships. A society where patience prevails is a cohesive, strong society capable of overcoming crises.
- Family cohesion and stability: Marital and family life are based on understanding, forbearance, and forgiveness, all of which are forms of patience. Patience with the mistakes of a spouse, patience in raising children and the accompanying troubles and hardships, is what preserves the family structure from collapse. If patience were lost from family relationships, homes would disintegrate and generations would be lost.
- Building solid social relationships: Patience with others' harm, suppressing anger, and forgiving the offender are all reasons to purify hearts and spread love among people. The one who is overly protective of his personal rights, who cannot bear any word or situation, lives in constant conflict with everyone, while the patient, forbearing person earns people's respect and love.
- Achieving cooperation and solidarity: In crises and calamities that befall societies (such as wars, natural disasters, epidemics), patience is the fundamental pillar for societal cohesion. The patience of individuals in losing loved ones and property, their cooperation with each other, and their solidarity to overcome the ordeal cannot happen without patience. Patience makes society like a single body; if one part suffers, the rest of the body responds with sleeplessness and fever.
- Promoting justice and responsibility: In workplaces and positions of responsibility, patience is required to achieve justice and fairness. The judge patiently listens to the litigants, the teacher patiently teaches students, the doctor patiently treats patients. Without patience, these professions become dry routine work, losing the sense of responsibility and trust.
Fifth Section: Patience in Facing Modern Challenges
The pace of life in the modern era has become very fast, and humans live in a world full of temptations and allurements, in a virtual world teeming with quick stimuli (likes, comments) that make it difficult to be patient. We want everything quickly: quick success, quick wealth, quick solutions. This lifestyle makes patience more difficult and, at the same time, more important than ever.
- Patience in seeking knowledge and education: In the age of the internet and quick information, focusing on learning a particular skill or science for a long time has become arduous. Young people tend to obtain information superficially and quickly. But true mastery, excellence, and creativity only come with patience, perseverance, and long training. Whoever wants to be a skilled doctor, a brilliant scientist, or a genius programmer must be patient through years of learning, study, and application.
- Patience against temptations and desires: Today's world is drowning in pornography, drugs, and intoxicants, and sin has become available at the push of a button. Patience here is not easy, but it is a religious and moral duty. Patience in refraining from sin requires strong faith and true willpower, but it is the only price to preserve human dignity, religion, and morals.
- Patience with people's harm on social media: Cyberbullying, insults, and futile debates have become a hallmark of the virtual world. Patience with others' harm, not retaliating in kind, and not being swept away by overwhelming emotions, is the way to preserve our mental health and avoid wasting time in pointless conflicts.
- Patience in work and building the future: The job market has become highly competitive. A young person may spend years searching for a job or at the beginning of their career with modest salaries. Patience here means continuing to develop oneself, acquiring skills, and not despairing of repeated attempts until reaching the desired goal. Quick surrender is the path to failure.
Sixth Section: How Do We Acquire the Trait of Patience?
After learning about these great virtues of patience, the question remains: How do we acquire this trait and make it part of our personality? Patience is not only an innate disposition that a person is born with; it is a virtue that can be learned, cultivated, and developed through practice and training. Here are some practical steps that help with that:
- Belief in divine decree and contentment with God's will: To be certain that everything is by decree, and that God does not decree anything without profound wisdom, is the foundation of patience. When we believe that what missed us was not meant for us, and what befell us could not have missed us, calamities become easier to bear. Contentment with decree is the sweet fruit of faith.
- Realizing the fruits of patience: Remember the great reward that God has prepared for the patient in the Hereafter, and remember the psychological and social benefits in this world. When you realize these fruits, the hardship of patience becomes easier to bear.
- Gradually accustoming oneself to patience: Start by training yourself to be patient in small daily matters, such as patience in traffic jams, or patience in listening to an opposing opinion. Then move on to larger matters. As they say: "Whoever persists in something, becomes accustomed to it."
- Seeking help from God and supplicating: Always pray to God to grant you patience and steadfastness. One of the most beautiful supplications of the Prophet (peace be upon him) was: "O Allah, I ask You for steadfastness in all matters and determination in following the right path." And God said about His righteous servants: "Our Lord, pour upon us patience and plant firmly our feet."
- Looking at those who are afflicted more severely: If a calamity befalls you, look at those who are afflicted more severely than you. This reminds you of God's blessings upon you and eases the impact of the calamity. The Prophet (peace be upon him) guided us to this by saying: "Look at those who are below you (in terms of worldly status) and do not look at those who are above you, for that is more likely to prevent you from disdaining the blessings God has bestowed upon you."
- Knowing the true nature of this world: Keep in mind that this world is a place of trial and test, not a place of permanent reward and comfort. Whoever knows that his life will not be free from fatigue and hardship prepares himself psychologically for it, and thus is not shocked when calamity strikes.
- Following the example of the patient: Read the biographies of the prophets, the righteous, and the patient, and see how they endured hardships until God granted them victory. The story of Job's patience, the story of Joseph's patience, and the patience of Muhammad (peace be upon him) in his mission are all inspiring examples that teach us the true meaning of patience.
Conclusion
At the conclusion of this journey into the world of this great virtue, it becomes certain to us that patience is not merely a moral choice, but an existential and life necessity indispensable for any human being who wants to live a dignified and stable life. It is the fuel that drives us toward our goals, the shield that protects us in daily battles, and the light by which we see our path through darkness. Through patience, hopes are achieved; through patience, worries vanish; through patience, faith increases; and through patience, morals are elevated. We ask God to grant us all beautiful patience, patience without panic, without complaint, and without lamentation to anyone but Him, and to make us among His patient servants whom He will reward without account. Indeed, He is the Guardian of that and is able to do it. And all praise is due to God, Lord of the worlds.
