Benefits of reading the Holy Quran

Article Without Side Margins
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds, and peace and blessings be upon the most honorable of the Prophets and Messengers, our Prophet Muhammad, and upon all his family and companions. To proceed:

Indeed, the Noble Quran is the word of Allah Almighty, miraculous in its wording, an act of worship to recite it, revealed to our Master Muhammad ﷺ, transmitted to us through successive narration (mutawatir), written in the mushafs (copies), beginning with Surah Al-Fatihah and ending with Surah An-Nas. It is the constitution of this nation, the way of life, the light of its path, and the healing for hearts. Allah Almighty revealed it as an explanation for everything, and as guidance, mercy, and good tidings for the Muslims.

Reading the Noble Quran is not merely a habit or tradition; rather, it is a great act of worship by which the servant draws closer to his Lord. It carries within it immense and magnificent benefits that bring goodness to the individual and society in this world and the Hereafter. In this topic, we will sail together into the depths of this vast sea to learn about a plentiful number of these benefits that make reading the Noble Quran a vital necessity and a daily methodology indispensable for the Muslim.

Firstly: Faith and Spiritual Benefits

Undoubtedly, the greatest benefits of reading the Noble Quran are manifested in the faith and spiritual aspect, as it nourishes the soul, strengthens the connection with the Creator, and illuminates the heart.

Achieving Servitude and Complying with Allah's Command

The very first fruit of reading the Quran is complying with the command of Allah Almighty, Who encouraged it and made it an act of worship by which one draws near to Him. He said: "Indeed, those who recite the Book of Allah and establish prayer and spend [in His cause] out of what We have provided them, secretly and publicly, hope for a transaction that will never perish" [Fatir: 29]. Reciting the Quran is a profitable trade with Allah, with no stagnation or loss.

Descent of Tranquility and Reassurance

One of the greatest things the reciter of the Quran gains is the feeling of psychological comfort and tranquility that envelops him. The words of the Quran carry an immense faith-based energy that instills serenity and reassurance in the soul and removes worries and grief. He said: "Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured" [Ar-Ra'd: 28]. And the greatest and most honorable remembrance is the Book of Allah.

Healing for Hearts and Bodies

Allah described the Quran as healing. He said: "And We send down of the Quran that which is healing and mercy for the believers" [Al-Isra: 82]. This healing includes healing hearts from their diseases such as doubt, hypocrisy, rancor, and envy. It is also healing for bodies from ailments and pain, whether through legitimate ruqyah (incantation) or by the blessing of this great Book.

Ascending to Ranks in Paradise

Allah has made for the recitation of the Quran a great reward proportionate to the reciter's status in the Hereafter. For every letter the Muslim reads, he gets a good deed, and each good deed is multiplied by ten. Moreover, a servant's rank in Paradise is raised according to how much of the Quran he had with him. He ﷺ said: "It will be said to the companion of the Quran: 'Recite and rise up, recite slowly and distinctly as you used to do in the world, for your rank will be at the last verse you recite'" (Narrated by Abu Dawood and At-Tirmidhi). This is a great hadith showing that the ranks of Paradise are connected to the verses of the Quran; the more a person recites, the higher he ascends in its stations.

The Quran's Intercession for its Companion

The Quran will intercede on the Day of Resurrection for its reciter who used to act upon it and recite it during the night and at the ends of the day. He ﷺ said: "Recite the Quran, for it will come on the Day of Resurrection as an intercessor for its companions" (Narrated by Muslim). This great intercession is sufficient to be a strong motivator for the Muslim to adhere to his Lord's Book.

Secondly: Scientific and Intellectual Benefits

The Quran is not only a book of guidance and spirituality but also a treasure trove of sciences and knowledge that stimulate the mind to reflect and ponder.

A Source of Knowledge and Learning

The Noble Quran contains many verses that speak about the universe, creation, mankind, and history, prompting the Muslim to research and reflect on these phenomena. It contains precise scientific indications that preceded modern science by centuries, such as references to the stages of embryonic development, the expansion of the universe, the role of mountains in stabilizing the earth, and others. These scientific miracles increase the believer's faith and certainty in the greatness of the Creator and the truth of His Prophet's message.

Developing the Faculty of Contemplation and Thinking

Mere reading of the Quran requires the Muslim to have his mind present, contemplating its meanings and pondering its rulings and lessons. He said: "[This is] a blessed Book which We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], that they might reflect upon its verses and that those of understanding would be reminded" [Sad: 29]. This daily practice of reflection develops the analytical abilities of the mind and makes it more capable of understanding matters and extracting lessons and wisdom.

Stimulating and Strengthening Memory

Memorizing the Noble Quran or repeatedly reciting its verses continuously activates and strengthens memory, especially in children. Modern studies have proven that memorizing the Quran has a positive effect on increasing comprehension abilities and improving academic performance, because it relies on repetition, revision, and focus.

Mastering the Arabic Language and Correcting Speech

Since the Quran was revealed in a clear Arabic tongue, consistently reciting it greatly contributes to mastering the Arabic language and understanding its secrets and eloquence. It also corrects pronunciation, develops linguistic taste, and protects the speaker from mistakes in articulation.

Thirdly: Psychological and Health Benefits

The Quran has a profound impact on the psychological and physical health of a person, which modern psychological and neurological studies are increasingly confirming.

Treatment of Mental Illnesses

In an age where mental illnesses such as anxiety, depression, and stress are prevalent, the Noble Quran remains the safe haven and effective remedy. Listening to the verses of Allah or reciting them instills in the soul a deep sense of security and trust in Allah, and reminds the person that Allah is with him and will not abandon him. This feeling reduces the secretion of stress hormones (like cortisol and adrenaline) and stimulates the secretion of hormones responsible for happiness and relaxation.

Relaxation and Lowering Blood Pressure

It has been scientifically proven that listening to the Noble Quran with focus and contemplation leads to relaxation of the body's muscles, regularization of heartbeats, and lowering of blood pressure. The beautiful voice of the reciter, along with the sublime meanings of the verses, creates a state of physiological calm similar to that produced by advanced meditation techniques.

Regulating Sleep and Improving Mood

The Prophet ﷺ made reading the Quran before sleep a Sunnah, especially reciting Surahs Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas, and Ayat al-Kursi. This practice wards off insomnia and nightmares and prepares the body for peaceful, deep sleep. Furthermore, starting the day by reciting the Quran in the morning stabilizes the mood and gives a person positive energy that motivates them to accomplish their tasks with activity and zeal.

Fourthly: Social and Moral Benefits

The benefits of the Quran are not limited to the individual only but extend to the entire society, building bridges of love, cooperation, and virtuous morals among its members.

Building a Virtuous Society

The Quran is the constitution of morals and values. When a Muslim reads the Quran and ponders it, he finds commands for truthfulness, justice, benevolence, maintaining family ties, visiting the sick, honoring guests, and prohibitions against lying, cheating, backbiting, slander, and injustice. Applying these individual morals creates a cohesive and strong society dominated by love and brotherhood.

Strengthening Family Bonds

The Quran urges kindness to parents, caring for children's rights, and living with spouses in kindness. A family that gathers to recite the Quran and study its rulings is a family dominated by affection and mercy, with fewer problems and conflicts, because its members derive solutions for their disputes from this wise Book.

Unity of the Islamic Nation (Ummah)

The Quran is the common bond for over one and a half billion Muslims worldwide, despite their different languages, colors, and homelands. They all recite it in the same language and believe in all its verses. This unity in source makes the Islamic nation feel as one body; if any part suffers, the rest of the body responds with sleeplessness and fever.

Fifthly: Etiquettes of Reciting the Quran for Maximum Benefit

To achieve these great benefits, the Muslim must adhere to certain etiquettes when reciting the Book of Allah, making his recitation fruitful and accepted, Allah willing:

  • Sincerity to Allah Almighty: The intention must be purely for Allah, not intended for show or reputation, nor merely to obtain people's praise.
  • Ritual Purity: It is recommended for the reciter to be in a state of purity (wudu), as this is more complete and better, and more appropriate for honoring the words of Allah.
  • Seeking Refuge (Isti'adha): It is prescribed to say before starting recitation: "I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan," in compliance with His saying: "So when you recite the Quran, [first] seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the expelled [from His mercy]" [An-Nahl: 98].
  • Contemplation (Tadabbur) and Humility (Khushu'): The reciter should be mindful of the greatness of the Speaker, Allah Almighty, ponder the meanings of the verses, be affected by them, weep at verses of promise and threat, ask for mercy at verses of mercy, and seek refuge at verses of punishment.
  • Beautifying the Voice with Recitation: The Prophet ﷺ commanded beautifying the voice with the Quran, saying: "Beautify the Quran with your voices" (Narrated by Abu Dawood and An-Nasa'i). A beautiful voice increases the heart's humility and invites contemplation.
  • Acting Upon the Quran: This is the ultimate fruit and greatest goal of reading the Quran: that the Quran becomes a way of life. The reciter should regard its lawful as lawful and its unlawful as unlawful, and emulate its morals and etiquettes.

Conclusion

In conclusion, we can confidently say that reading the Noble Quran is not a spiritual luxury or merely a religious ritual we practice at specific times. Rather, it is an utmost life necessity, a source of strength, honor, and empowerment. It is the light that illuminates our path through the darkness of this life. It is the cure for every disease, the companion that never tires, the solace in solitude, wealth in poverty, and richness in need.

Adhering to the recitation and contemplation of the Quran is what nurtures the strong, faithful, Godly generations that build civilizations and uplift nations. It is what gave honor to our ancestors and the companions of the Prophet ﷺ, making them masters of the world in a short time. Our return to the Book of Allah – reciting, memorizing, pondering, and acting upon it – is the only path for our Ummah to regain its glory and honor.

We ask Allah, the Almighty, to make us among the people of the Quran, those who are His family and His special ones, and to grant us its recitation during the night and at the ends of the day in a manner that pleases Him with us, to illuminate our insights with His Book, to expand our chests thereby, to ease our affairs thereby, and to seal our deeds with righteousness thereby. Indeed, He is All-Hearing, Responsive.

And all praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds, first and last, outwardly and inwardly. And may Allah send blessings and peace upon our Master Muhammad and upon all his family and companions.
